Could not help but blog about the new show – Satyamev Jayate by Aamir Khan on StarPlus. While it addressed a very critical and obvious issue with a punch, I could not but help wonder the possible responses the audience would have of the show. So are we going to externalize the issue as issues out there that others have to change or are we going to “go in”? May be we are not the ones committing blatant crimes that are outlined but the real question is are we in small ways perpetuating the same issues?
The first issue handled was of ‘Female Foeticide’ – and while significant majority of us may not be the ones committing such heinous crime – the real question are there things we do / purport that are in some way encouraging gender inequality. It may be that we are doing that in our workplace or in how we treat our daughters, wives, girlfriends, and even mothers.
The real opportunity here is to look at gender inequality in the broadest sense and how all of it leads to the larger issues. So here are the issues I feel we ought to reflect on:
- are we giving our daughters the same opportunities that we give our sons?
- are we as daughters allowing injustice against us out of consideration and love for our family?
- are we treating women in our lives with the total respect they deserve?
- are we giving the freedom to women that all humans deserve or are we gender biased in anyway
Outrage or deep commitment to truth
Another issue that comes to my mind is – is our outrage at peak now with the show; or are we going to sustain our commitment to “being the change we want to see around us”. Are we going to be couch critics or are we going to reflect ourselves and make changes ourselves – even if they are small changes we can make.
Are we going to limit the search of the truth to only the burning issues raised or are we going to have the courage to face the truth; speak up against it in any and all spheres of our lives.
I sincerely hope that the opportunity accorded to us by a show like Satyamav Jayate is not lost or limited; that it has far reaching impact because we choose to take self responsibility to not do any injustice and even not to allow injustice to us.
Satyamev Jayate – the truth always prevails – and may now be the time of change and let us be the change torch bearers in our own little ways everyday.
Good post.
I remembered the time when you started Amore. You had observed issues in prevailing restaurants and in order to correct them you starting a joint of your own, that served fresh and healthy food. Because you chose to stood up, you were able to bring a positive change. I keep telling about your initiative to several people and if more and more restaurants started following your intent then we’d have less number of diseases that arise due to unhealthy eating.
We need a lot more insihgts like this!
