Emotions! Affirmations – The creative power of thoughts

by October 29, 2012 3 Comments

How many of us are comfortable standing in front of a mirror and saying “I am awesome”.  Forget being comfortable most of us find it gimmicky and outright cheesy!! Furthermore we are usually just not comfortable giving and even receiving compliments.  When someone says, “You did a great job” our first mental or spoken reaction is “it was ok – not a big deal”.  Is that really humility.  Would we be narcissist if we accepted and affirmed what is good in us.

Simply put, affirmations are our thoughts and beliefs about how worthy we are and what we deserve.  If we think we are worthy, we are.

Thoughts become reality

By now we have heard it everywhere that our thoughts create our reality.  If we took time to quietly reflect on our past life and what we have achieved and what we have not achieved no other proof will be needed that indeed that it is our thoughts that create our reality. Whether we talk about “Law of attraction”, “Power of intentions”, or “Power of the Subconscious mind” and many spiritual teachings all point to that.

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,

Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

― Mahatma Gandhi

When it is so simple? Just create positive thoughts and your life will manifest those positive things – why is that we can’t do simply that?  I mean what could be easier?

Doubts of our own worthiness

The real cause for us being uncomfortable with positive “affirmations” of our worth (deserving all the great things) is the doubt of our worthiness created since our childhood.  We keep hearing, you need to have college degree from Ivy League or IIT / IIM to succeed.  You need to fair and beautiful as a woman to get a good husband (in typical Indian context). You need to be tall and connected to be a successful actor and the list goes on and on. The irony of life is that there are hundreds of examples where people have succeeded despite not having all these requirements yet we choose to the stories that we are not adequate.

As a matter of fact, if you ask anyone happy and successful, they will tell you – “they always believed in themselves” despite the contrary opinions and the odds of their circumstances.  They were not given any assurance or formula or the silver spoon – they just believed … and you know what.  That belief is what made it happened.

Positive Affirmation Practice

First and foremost deeply read and reflect on every thought of the quote below.  This has been the anchor thought in my life ever since I first read this in 2008.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.’ We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Marianne Williamson, from her book A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of “A Course in Miracles”,

Then make it a daily practice to give yourself positive affirmations. Ideally, in front of a mirror (may be when brushing 🙂 for the ones complain they don’t have enough time ).  Here are some examples to help you start:

  • I am my best friend. I am always there for me before I am there for others.
  • Everything I need comes to be me at perfect time
  • I have abundant energy, vitality and well-being
  • All is well in my life
  • I am fit healthy and attractive
  • I follow my joy
  • I am magnet for success and happiness
  • I am willing to release old patterns and negative beliefs
  • I am willing to release the need to be right
  • Money comes easily and abundantly to me
  • I persevere with optimism and enthusiasm
  • I see endless possibilities before me
  • I am worth loving
  • I am strong and decisive
  • I attract lasting happy relationships into my life
  • The love in my life begins with me
  • I am on my way to creating a WOW life

Be your best friend, your own motivator, feed your self with the nourishment to create a WOW life that you deserve. I am awesome and I know it!
