Our natural tendency is to try to approach whatever we like, be it a person, thing, or topic of interest. By approaching things their presence becomes more vivid and our enjoyment increases. Intimacy connects us in a way that’s not possible to the outsider.
We seek intimacy with the things that are important to us. However, when we come too close we can become overwhelmed by the presence of things. We are most intimate with ourselves, yet there are many things we fail to see in ourselves that are obvious to others. The one who arrives at the mountain top sees the bigger picture. Those in the valley are caught up in the detail. Being close brings intimacy, but distance brings clarity.
From time to time, create distance with a break to gain a broader unattached perspective.
